Exciting New Treatment Offered For Coronary Artery Disease
Hamilton Cardiology Associates is pleased to announce that Drs. Edward Wingfield and Justin Fox successfully performed the first SHOCKWAVE coronary lithoplasty procedure in Mercer County at St. Francis Medical Center on August 4, 2021. The SHOCKWAVE device uses ultrasonic pressure waves to disrupt and modify plaque in coronary arteries that have a large amount of calcium, allowing interventional cardiologists to more effectively treat difficult blockages. The device is used during a cardiac catheterization procedure and typically a stent is also placed to prevent the blockage from re-occurring. The SHOCKWAVE technology has been used for decades in the treatment of kidney stones and more recently has been FDA approved for use in the peripheral, and now, coronary arteries.

“We have had great success using the SHOCKWAVE device to treat patients with blockages in their lower extremities over the past few years and now I’m excited to be able to apply the same technology to help our patients with severely calcified coronary arteries.” said Dr. Wingfield. Dr. Fox added, “Some of our most challenging cases in the cardiac cath lab involve patients with severe coronary artery calcium. The SHOCKWAVE device is a game-changer in that it allows us to treat these blockages in a safe, highly effective and typically painless way using technology that hasn’t been used in the coronary arteries before.”

Over the past two decades, the interventional cardiologists of Hamilton Cardiology, lead by Dr. Jay Patel, have been the leaders in Mercer County in advancing the procedural treatment of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease and structural heart disease. Dr. Patel has served as the Medical Director of the only full-service cardiac catheterization lab in Mercer County at St Francis Medical Center since 2006. In addition, Hamilton Cardiology physicians have brought several advances in cardiac care to Mercer County, initiating the use locally of abdominal aortic stent grafting for abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid artery stenting, the Impella left ventricular support device, EKOS catheter-directed thrombolysis to treat pulmonary embolism, distal radial access for cardiac catheterization and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

Hamilton Cardiology Associates’ Interventional Cardiology Department is comprised of Dr. Patel, Dr. Wingfield, Dr. Fox, Dr. Bora Toklu, and Dr. Shakil Shaikh. All of these providers will be able to offer SHOCKWAVE lithoplasty as part of their care at St. Francis Medical Center. To make an appointment with any of our physicians, call 609-584-1212.
